The Machame route,also known as the "Whiskey" route, and it is the most popular route used by climbers to the peak of the mountain.
Machame approaches from the southwest and descends using Mweka, giving climbers an opportunity of beautiful views of the expansive Shira Plateau, with an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Icefield.


The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. Compared to Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. It is considered a difficult route, better suited for more adventurous folks, and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. However first time climbers have made it to the peak via this route and if one follows the guides instructions in the end the goal of reaching the paek is achieved.

While on this route climbers spend nights in supplied tents prepared by our staff at designated campsites. Climbers will also have their meals which are prepared by experienced and professional cooks at the campsites.


The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although seven days is recommended so that climbers can have one day for acclimatization. Below is a typical 7 days climbing itinerary through Machame route.
